SME Limited Factory Tour, May 2013

In lobby with Brian Laker, my tour guide
Started in the Quality Control room...impressive array of measurement tools
Another shot of QC room
I was impressed with the passion of the QC workers I met...very committed to sending out only the best
Now out to the floor...most machines are now CNC based
If you know SME, I am sure you recognize these iconic base plates...solid brass...right out the cnc.
Still many many steps to the finish process...
Line of machines from different angle...
Solid aluminum plates for turntables in their present line
Off the machine earlier in the day...
Headshells for the M2 line...magnesium, light but incredibly sturdy. These are without finish.
Solid aluminum platters for one of the tables in their new line
Platter detail...
More parts awaiting finish...
Solid brass arm yokes...waiting for finish
Many parts twirl in this emulsion for hours before the next step in the finish process
There are several of these vats, all on timers specific to the part
And now to the assembly room...these are headshells near completion
Don't think it didn't cross my mind to fill my pockets! 🙂
Prototypes...
Like a kid in a candy store...
Post assembly, these current tables from their line-up are having their motors and bearings tested
More shots of the assembly room
Packing room...
All boxed and ready to go...
