Used Thorens TD-350 Turntable with SME M2-9 arm, fully serviced, $3295 plus shipping (Current new retail, $7199)
The revival of Thorens’ unique subchassis concept is startling with their new TD 350. The TD 350 represents the perfect symbiosis of a mass drive and a subchassis turntable and unites the benefits of both technologies. Experience the rebirth of a unique technology with the most modern materials and the latest knowledge inside the TD 350. Thorens calls is “IDD” (Independent Double Damping) and speak of the way the subchassis is suspended inside the massive wooden plinth. This kind of suspension damps the vibrations and excursions in the horizontal and the vertical completely independent of each other. In combination with their nine-pound heavy platter and the new low-friction bearing, this drive has got such an incredible stable and calm rotation that results in high resolution and big dynamics. The built-in electronic unit controls and stabilizes the speed exactly.
The 350 revives the brand’s famous suspended-subchassis design…banging on the plinth or the platform – and I mean banging, not tapping – didn’t faze the system. I couldn’t hear the faintest thump through my speakers…The TD 350 produced a 1004Hz test track – about as good as it gets…There was weight and control on bottom…There wasn’t a hint of midbass bloat: the mids were rich, full and nicely detailed. And the top was sweet, yet vibrant and extended…classic ‘suspended-turntable sound’ done to perfection, without the soft, bottom-end discontinuity and bloat often heard from such designs.
The SME M2-9 Tonearm
The SME tonearms have been lauded for their excellence for over 40 years. The M2-9 is their latest arm. (Retail $1595) It incorporates many of the classic SME characteristics, yet belongs solidly in the here and now. It can easily handle cartridges in a multi-thousand dollar range.
The Grado cartridge in photos is not included. Given the caliber of turntable and tonearm, This package could easily handle cartridges in the $500-$2000 price range. I am a dealer for Ortofon, Grado, and Dynavector. If you purchase a cartridge from me, installation and alignment is provided free of charge.
This Week’s Used Thorens TD-350 w/ SME M2-9 Tonearm
I acquired this unit in trade recently. The owner stated he purchased it in 2007 for approximately $5500. If you research the TD – 350 as a current offering with the SME tonearm option, it is now over $7000.
Cosmetically, the turntable has been very well cared for. I would rate it as 9.0/10.0
There are no signs of wear to the Red Ash (Ash Bordeaux) veneer or any of the metal surfaces.
As you typically find, there are light swirls and a few light scratches on the original dustcover.
The SME M2-9 is also in excellent condition. There is some very light marking where the tonearm tube enters the armrest. Otherwise the arm is flawless.
The turntable has been completely detailed, serviced and tested. I am providing a brand-new genuine Thorens belt.
I do not have the original box/packing, however I do have the transport screws to lockdown the suspension. I am confident the turntable will arrive in the condition as stated and shown.
Please note the turntable has female rca receptacles on the back so you can use your own cables. Cables are note provided, except for the original 1M ground cable.
Your table is guaranteed to look and work as described, or you may return it within ten days of arrival for a full refund, minus return shipping charges and a 5% restocking fee.
